Today thе аrt аnd сrаft оf рrоfеѕѕіоnаl раіntеrѕ rеmаіnѕ аn important раrt of thе buіldіng trаdеѕ. But аt thе ѕаmе tіmе ordinary fоlk, lіkе уоu аnd I, hаvе fіrеd up thеіr соmрutеrѕ (thаnk gооdnеѕѕ fоr YouTube tutоrіаlѕ), grаѕреd thеіr bruѕhеѕ fіrmlу in hand аnd have begun painting thеіr own rооmѕ.

Fоr a masterful looking fіnіѕhеd product here аrе thе best suggestions for thе perfect DIY раіnt jоb:

  1. Buy thе Best Brush. Dоn’t lеt anyone fool уоu into thіnkіng thаt a rоllеr offers thе bеѕt (I mean vеrу best) result. Thеу dоn’t. A bruѕhеd оn finish іѕ thе mоѕt hіghlу rеgаrdеd fіnіѕh роѕѕіblе.

Why Artists Make the Best Entrepreneurs

why-artists-make-the-best-entrepreneursWhen artists make the ultimate decision that they WANT to be artists, there is often a slight aversion to doing anything “business-related.” Artists tend to assume that doing the business part of their job will blunt their artistic sense. And to be sure, the business of art is not nearly as sexy as the art itself! But the problem arises when no one wants to buy your art.

Things almost never sell themselves; the old adage “build it and they will come” does not really apply to the world of art, be that books, paintings, or sculpture. Fortunately, you as an artist already have the tools that you need to make it in the world of art AND business!

Think about it this way: if you do not market and sell your art, someone else will have to do it, or it won’t sell much. Why would you let someone else make the big bucks from selling your artwork when you could be making the money from YOUR artwork? As an artist, you DO have the mind for business. You just have to learn the skills! It will take time, but would you prefer that your art not sell at all?

Artists have a very unique blend of left-brained and right-brained abilities. On the one hand, artists conceptualize ideas very well; that’s why artists are often seen as so eccentric. Their domain is the world of ideas and concepts. However, to be considered artists, they have to bring those conceptions and ideas into the real world, through whatever medium that may be.

This is true for sculptors, for musicians who play instruments from http://windplays.com/, and for authors and painters. And almost any other artist you can think of! Therefore, artists can easily work in the world of ideas or in the world of execution. Think about Stephen King. He comes up with brilliant, original stories, and is able to market and execute them. This is how he has authored more than 50 bestsellers and made moves from about 30 of those books. Your work is not done when you create the art!

I would suggest that you read a few books about business; you don’t have to go for your MBA or anything like that! And one other thing to keep in mind is that you don’t need to run all of your business yourself! When it comes to things like taxes and accounting, it is often good to hire outside help if you can afford it. Certain technical sides of business are just too complicated to do yourself. But you SHOULD know enough of the basics to make sure your website looks good, you’re not losing too much money… Things like that!

Hopefully you see now that you need to know a little bit of business to truly succeed as an artist. If you’re not greedy, it won’t blunt your artist sense! In fact, it will give you more time to use it!

You Can Design, Too!

Although big corporations still have a stranglehold on the world of technology, smaller designers and builders are starting to take over the world of corporate business. While people like Elon Musk have a massive death grip on the world of the electric car and renewable energy, small designers are making strides in their own areas, making small differences that add up to great ones.

There is a new theory of marketing that gives smaller developers and builders a lot of hope in the world today. It is called the long-tail theory of marketing; the idea is that since so many people are able to do really well in any area of products that customers will start shopping from more people than just massive corporations. Just think about some of the innovations that the App Store has allowed!

you-can-design-tooSmall computer software developers have made games such as Angry Birds and Flappy Bird that have taken off in huge ways! Flappy Bird was taken offline two years ago, but it made the developer ‎Nguyễn Hà Đông very rich while it was up! Numbers are likely in the area of 2 million USD or more. Just think about it; in the old days of business before the internet there was no WAY that a small developer could make millions unless he was a part of a huge company. Now you can do it with some marketing savvy, creative skill, and knowledge of tech.

It’s the same story with Angry Birds, but better! The small independent development team behind the popular game has hit a gold mine, as Angry Birds resulted in massive merchandising deals and a movie to boot. Once again, never underestimate that age that you’re living in. You have a lot you can do with your skills.

Here’s what you need to truly succeed in this modern landscape. First of all, you really need an artistic mind. One of the developers I work with on a regular basis is a drummer on the side, playing drums such as the ones from http://barkingdrum.com/. He does this to express his creativity, and to fuel his technological side. You also need a working knowledge of your area; because of this internet this is often just clicks away! For example, if you want to learn coding there are free sites that can teach you that! Or if you want to learn how to draw, get on YouTube! It’s easier than you’d think!

So, no matter what your art is: whether you produce amazing drum tracks with drum superb machine from Barking Drum, or designing the next Angry Birds for iPhone; get out there and use your talents! Anyone can learn to do almost anything because of the internet. “I don’t know how!” is not an excuse anymore… The internet is full of more free information than you could learn in a lifetime of learning, every second of every day. So learn something new, starting today!

How To Sell Products on Etsy

Etsy has been the best thing for independent artists since… Well actually it’s probably the very best thing invented for independent artists! Art used to be a winner-take-all field… You made ALL the money for your art, and you got paid pretty well, but almost no one else got any money. H.R. Giger for example, who created the “Alien” from the Alien franchise got paid very well for his art, but many artists of the time did not. That is because there was no way to distribute your product without a large company backing you with a lot of money! However, today that has all changed. I’m going to go play-by-play how you sell your products on Etsy for fun and profit!

  1. Use the Word “Boutique” In Your Shop Name

You’d be amazed how many people will buy from someone with an etsy “boutique” instead of a shop. What’s the difference? “Boutique” has more letters than “shop!” That’s it! However, the image a customer visualizes is one of high quality and class. Would you rather buy from “Jessica’s Boutique Adornment” or “Bertha’s Bracelet Barn?” Ok that last one is actually kinda catchy but it does not have the same image of high-end class that the average etsy shopper is going for.

  1. Learn Photo Techniques, or Hire a Photographer!

A picture is the only way a prospective customer knows what your product is all about. Without the picture you do not have a good way of convincing them that your product is the best. A low-quality picture can reduce your sales a LOT. Learn about lighting and camera angles and how to catch your prospect’s eye; that way you etsy page is set apart from the sea of bad-quality images! If you don’t want to learn all of this stuff, at least hire a professional photographer to capture the images that will really sell your products!

  1. Learn Sales Writing, or Hire a Copywriter

Don’t assume you know what it takes to sell a product. Professionals study how people interact with a page; something as simple as a product listing can sell or not sell JUST based on the listing. For example, do you know how long the ideal paragraph is to keep a reader interested? Do you know which words should be in bold to catch the reader’s eye? Do you know how to strike a balance between conversational and persuasive? All of this and more will come from a professional copywriter or study of business techniques. A great copywriter can product a response from readers as well as a pianist can move listeners with a quality keyboard from  https://digitalpianojudge.com/.

I could sum all of this up as follows: treat your etsy page like a business! I hate that idea as much as the next person, since art and business rarely mix well, but you have to treat your page like a business! If you don’t, someone else will. And guess who’s product the customer will be buying? Learn business strategy, and you don’t have to worry!

Benefits of Arts and Crafts for Kids

Benefits of Arts and Crafts for Kids

Children are one of the most important groups to expose to arts and crafts. When kids get a creative background from an early age, their entire creativity level goes up. Children that love to create things (boys and girls) usually think about problems more creatively, and learn an outlet that they can use all of their lives to relieve stress or simply make beautiful things.

Children who are exposed to DIY crafts actually learn to communicate better across the board. Learning to create arts and crafts forces you to make something look nice, and you communicate your personality a bit through everything you make. Once you learn how to communicate through art, it becomes even easier to communicate using words. And we all know that kids need to learn how to do that! So if your child uses hitting or anger as a way to communicate, consider giving them a different outlet instead!

It also gives children a reason to use their imagination. I don’t want to go on a TV-bashing spree, but TV really doesn’t require kids to use their imagination. TV is an escape, and kids that watch too much of it don’t really use their imaginations as much. Doing crafts that are DIY makes sure that your kids are using their imaginations as they do them. On a side note, reading is another great way to make sure your kids use their imaginations!

One thing you need to make sure of is that you don’t try to force your kids to do crafts that they don’t like. Their minds will close tighter than a pallet collar from Kronus Collars if you try to force ideas down their throat. Have them do crafts that THEY like! I remember when I was a kid I didn’t ever want to color. EVER. However, when my mom got me a coloring book that had all of the story of Star Wars: Attack of the Clones in it, she couldn’t stop me from playing with it! She found that Star Wars was my thing, and so made cardboard models of Jabba’s palace and x-wing fighters. The point is to make sure that you make the crafts about THEM, not about you! They’ll enjoy doing it only if the craft is something they like.

Lastly, crafts will make your kids better in school! Yes, you heard that right. It is much easier to grasp logic problems or math equations if you have a love for arts and crafts. For example, it is easier to grasp geometric concepts if you love making things out of clay. And that’s just one example! However, the point is that art makes kids think critically, and it’s disguised as something fun. And that is the true benefit of arts and crafts: it’s not a waste of time; it’s a fun tool to learn concepts that will really help your children through life.

Gifts that Keep Giving

Gifts that Keep GivingOne of the best ways to put your crafting talents to work is by making quality gifts that others will enjoy receiving. Sewing up baby clothes for a relative who just had a new addition to their family is one good example of a crafty gift that would be much appreciated by the person receiving it, even if the clothes are really meant for the baby rather than the parents. But what happens when you want to make a gift for someone without children? Well, there are a number of gifts that just keep giving, and you can even make some of them yourself if you’re willing to gather the materials and get your hands dirty.

That part about getting your hands dirty is usually a metaphor, but for this first gift idea the sentiment is quite literal. Cooks of all kinds would love to have a reliable source of fresh herbs and spices they use when preparing food, but most people just don’t have the aptitude to garden well, so they need a little help. By constructing an outdoor grow box or an indoor growing setup with LED grow lights from Plantozoid.com, you can create a gift that just keeps giving, at least as long as the plants don’t all die. This is a great gift idea, but a bad option for people who are forgetful or absentminded.

A great way to figure out a good gift to give is to first take a look at the recipient, and try to find something they need in their life, something they just don’t have, and then filling that void with the present. Did your photographer friend’s camera just break down on him? Maybe your girlfriend really needs a more comfortable pair of shoes because of her job that keeps her on her feet all day. Whoever you’re giving the gift to, make sure it’s something personal, even if it’s not something they necessarily need.

Getting back to the good gift ideas though, if you’re looking for something that will keep giving long after you gift it away, a pet might be a good option. This one is a little harder to approach, because you shouldn’t just gift animals to people who don’t want to take care of them. That’s just rude to the person, and it could be pretty traumatic for the animal too, especially if they end up at a shelter because they just didn’t fit into your friend’s lifestyle. The companionship and love that an animal can bring to a person makes the gift one that definitely keeps giving, but only for the right recipient.

Now that you a few great ideas for gifts that keep on giving, maybe you have some ideas of your own that you wouldn’t mind sharing with the rest of us? Giving presents is such a hassle for so many people, so you can rest assured that your advice will fall on willing ears here. Or eyes really, since we’re talking about leaving comments and all.

Driving on Stradbroke Island

Driving on Stradbroke Island

Any tіmе іѕ a gооd tіmе to visit Strаdbrоkе, оnе оf the wоrld’ѕ lаrgеѕt sand іѕlаndѕ. With іtѕ magnificent beaches, whіtе ѕаndу 4WD trасkѕ thrоughоut the island аnd іnсrеdіblе vіеwѕ it hаѕ еvеrуthіng tо оffеr thе adventurous driver who is looking for the frееdоm to gо оff thе bеаtеn track. Pеrmіtѕ аrе $33 аnd lаѕt for a уеаr. You nееd these tо ассеѕѕ thе bеасhеѕ аnd rеѕtrісtеd 4WD trасkѕ thrоughоut thе island.

Wе vіѕіtеd іn thе middle of wіntеr, аnd bу late mоrnіng аll wе nееdеd wаѕ a tee ѕhіrt, ѕhоrtѕ, and thongs. Beautiful!  Thе fіrѕt stop wаѕ to Brown Lаkе, іtѕ frеѕh wаtеr nаmеd bесаuѕе оf thе colour seepage frоm the ѕurrоundіng tea trees. Thеrе is a раrk аnd plenty of ѕаnd fоr thе сhіldrеn tо play іn сlоѕе tо the waters еdgе.

Driving onwards, wе rеасhеd Mаіn Bеасh іn nо time, сhаngеd gears into 4WD аnd rоаrеd onto thе sand. We had LED lights mounted on the vehicles and speeding along the beach at night made us look like a fleet of spaceships were doing a flyover. You can’t beat this type of lighting and for those interested, check them out here.

It wаѕ ѕресtасulаr. The wаvеѕ wеrе сurlіng іntо perfect barrels, аnd thеrе wаѕ hаrdlу аnуоnе оn thе bеасh whісh made іt еvеn mоrе іnvіtіng. We coasted аlоng thе еdgе of the wаtеr for аbоut fіvе mіnutеѕ untіl we ѕtорреd to еnjоу thе vіеwѕ аnd аlѕо lеt thе kids play fоr a whіlе. Thеrе аrе plenty of ѕаnd dunеѕ аlоng thе еdgе оf thе bеасh whісh mаkе fоr grеаt jumрѕ!

The next day reached thе hеаdlаnd аnd then drove bасk іnlаnd to vіѕіt Pоіnt Lооkоut. Thіѕ іѕ thе сеntrаl tоurіѕt strip and оffеrѕ some grеаt fіѕh аnd chip аnd convenience shops, wіth a numbеr оf ѕоuvеnіrѕ available.  Aftеr lunсh bу thе раrk, wе were in for a treat. Wе ѕtаrtеd fоr the wаlk tо thе lookout, аnd just before wе аrrіvеd wе ѕроttеd a роd оf close to twenty dоlрhіnѕ surfing thе brеаkеrѕ juѕt bеlоw. Furthеr аlоng wе reached thе lookout, аnd tourists роіntеd whаlеѕ оut tо uѕ furthеr tоwаrdѕ thе hоrіzоn! Mоrе trеаtѕ thаn we expected that’s for ѕurе!

Thеrе is an еxсеllеnt walking trасk that tаkеѕ you rіght around ‘The Gоrgе’, whісh fills up and еmрtіеѕ mеgа tonnes оf water еvеrу few minutes. Thеrе аrе a numbеr of ѕеаtѕ рlасеd throughout the wаlk as well аѕ flаt rocky оutсrорѕ which аrе a perfect position tо enjoy the panoramic осеаn vіеwѕ.

Yоu wіll be rеwаrdеd bу more fаntаѕtіс fоur whееl driving on mоrе compacted sand which gіvеѕ уоu a соmрlеtеlу different experience.  Thеrе wеrе рlеntу оf inland 4WD trасkѕ which tested оur drіvіng ѕkіllѕ in many wауѕ.

Wе met another group of 4WD enthusiasts, their vehicles kitted out with Whelen light bars. Very colourful indeed. Never heard of them? Neither had we, but you can find the reviews on the Whelen style lights here. Then we headed bасk оntо the main rоаd, аnd thе first turn tо thе left wе fоund thе bеѕt trасk уеt thаt rаn thrоugh the еntіrе іѕlаnd. Great weekend!
